Hiring is one of, if not the, most important aspects of running a successful association. The consequences of making a bad hire are dire. Your association must have the right people in the right place to get the job done well – it’s that simple. But of course hiring is anything but simple! In this session, you’ll learn a four-step process for hiring that will give you a multi-faceted view of candidates, help you overcome biases, and greatly reduce your chances of making a bad hire.

Every member of your organization joined from an engaged, passionate place. During their first event they were excited and intrigued. However, with such demanding roles in their workplaces, it's understandable that their association membership would take a back seat. It can be easy for them to rationalize skipping networking events or educational sessions because of the demands of their daily life. How can we re-engage and impassion our members?  This interactive session will utilize engaging stories, insightful exercises, and entertaining antidotes. You will walk away with practical tools to positively impact your members by reigniting their passion and re-engaging their commitment. You will obtain techniques and exercises to help your members look beyond what your association 'is' and what your association 'does' to reveal what your professional association truly MEANS to them and their professional success.

Do you enjoy workshops where you can actively listen and challenge yourself? Or, do you enjoy workshops where you can actively participate and contribute to the learning? Are you early in your career and only beginning to see yourself as a leader? Or, are you an experienced leader? Whether you responded yes or no, this learning opportunity is for you! Organizational Inclusion is the active involvement of every Employee's and Board Member's ideas, knowledge, perspectives, approaches, and styles to maximize organizational success. A Climate for Inclusion is a way of behaving. It is embodying what an organization communicates about inclusion, the inclusive behaviors of leaders and managers, and what they see being rewarded, valued, and expected of them in their daily work lives. In this extended session, where everyone is welcome, you can attend Part 1 or Part 2 independently, or both. In Part 1, for 60 minutes, a panel of CalSAE community members share highlights from their experience opening and growing the diversity, equity, and inclusion dialogue in their work. In Part 2, we have a town hall-style Q&A session. Come prepared to consider how diversity, equity, and inclusion are all of our responsibilities. Together we will explore the following ideas: Studies repeatedly show that embracing DEI positively impacts business outcomes, culture, and mission delivery. DEI doesn’t happen in theory. It happens in practice. From recruitment and retention practices to professional development and culture shifts, it can happen in manageable, influential steps over a long period. There are unlimited ways to take DEI action. Learn about ways to be a change agent from any role in your association, sparking small acts and different ways to open and mobilize the conversation in your organization.

Join us for a provocative session on the trends in governance and board leadership. In this session, our panel of expert consultants and facilitators will share their observations on the opportunities that change can bring, and the risks of being slow to adapt. During this extended session, you will explore several emerging themes that are impacting governance structures, models, and processes. If associations cannot expand their relevance they risk obsolescence. Come prepared to share your story and have discussions with your peers on these trends and to confront some uncomfortable truths about how associations operate within the broader society around us.

It’s pretty obvious to most of us that we have different aspects of our personalities that come out in different situations. We are different around our parents than we are our bosses. We have a different attitude and persona when dealing with children than we do dealing with our coworkers, or hopefully we do. What if we can examine these different states, get to know them and call them at will to help us achieve more and optimize our time and performance? Using ego state theory, we can identify the working aspects of our personality, name them, and learn how to bring forward our best self for the situation at hand. Practical, easy and effective techniques to help you be the best you you can be.

This workshop will place into post-pandemic member communications context the major findings from Naylor's Association Communications Benchmarking Study. The Association Communications Benchmarking Study, now in its tenth year, is one of the most comprehensive annual studies that focuses exclusively on the communication strategies and best practices of membership organizations. Elevate your communications strategy with us. We’ll review what the current association communications landscape looks like, and we’ll do a goal-setting and strategy exercise for your member communications. We’ll end by reviewing successful tactics for carrying out your 2021-2022 strategy. We strongly recommend all attendees take the 2021 Association Communications Benchmarking Survey in advance of this session. Bring your personalized Benchmarking Report Card to instantly compare how your organization is performing compared to all survey participants.
